The IDEAL model has been defined as a life cycle approach for process improvement.  It was developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) and is based on the Capability Maturity Model (CMM).  The model outlines the essential incremental steps for an organisation to follow to establish a successful software process improvement program.  Its origin is Shewhart’s Learning and Improvement Cycle which combined creative and management thinking with statistical analysis.  The IDEAL model consists of five phases and the name IDEAL is derived from the first letter of each of these phases:

I –   Initiating            Laying the groundwork
D –  Diagnosing         Determine where you are and what your future goals are
E –  Establishing        Planning how you are going to achieve your goals
A –  Acting                Doing the work required to reach your goal
L –  Leveraging          Learning from what you have done
